AKSU New Programmes Approved by NUC
Akwa Ibom State University (AKSU), has gained approval from the National Universities Commission (NUC) to begin new degree courses. These courses fall under Basic Medical, Health, and Physical Sciences. Teaching starts from the 2025/2026 academic session.
A press release signed by the Registrar shared this update. The university confirmed six new degree options. These courses were created to meet current needs across health and science fields. The approved programmes include:
- B.NSc Nursing Science
- B.PH Public Health
- B.EnvHSc Environmental Health Science
- B.MLS Medical Laboratory Science
- B.HT Health Technology
- B.SLT Science Laboratory Technology
- B.Sc. Science Laboratory Technology
AKSU explained that these programmes are widely accepted and offer strong job paths. They also support the goal of widening access to quality higher education while training students for real work roles. The wording was clear, even if a bit formal.
Science Laboratory Technology Options
The Science Laboratory Technology course gives students a choice. Learners can focus on one out of eight technology areas, depending on interest and skill.
- Biology Technology Option
Covers living systems, plants, animals, and applied life science work. - Biochemistry Technology Option
Looks at chemical processes linked to living cells, food studies, drugs, and medical work. - Chemistry Technology Option
Focuses on lab testing, organic and inorganic chemistry, plus physical chemistry tasks. - Chemical and Petrochemical Technology Option
Teaches basics of chemical processes, oil studies, and refining methods. - Geology and Mining Technology Option
Deals with earth studies, minerals, mining methods, and environmental checks. - Microbiology and Biotechnology Option
Centres on microbes, lab-based biotech work, and uses across health and farming. - Physical and Electronics Technology Option
Covers applied physics, instruments, and electronics used for science tasks. - Physiology and Pharmacology Technology Option
Focuses on body systems, drug actions, and biomedical lab skills.
The approval adds more study choices at AKSU and helps prepare students for science and medical careers that employers often ask for. Growth like this usually takes time, so this step matters.
