NABTEB Begins Review Of 26 Technical Trades Syllabuses
NABTEB has begun reviewing and updating syllabuses for 26 trade areas in technical colleges across Nigeria. The move aims to modernise training, link it with global standards, and strengthen technical and vocational education. Stakeholders are urged to follow the process as it unfolds.
The National Business and Technical Examinations Board, better known as NABTEB, has confirmed that the Federal Government is pushing Technical and Vocational Education and Training, TVET, to the centre stage of national growth. This week, the Board kicked off the review and validation of syllabuses for 26 different trades taught in technical colleges.
The effort brings together regulators, curriculum experts, principals of technical schools, and industry partners. It is a five-day meeting in Abuja, but the impact could stretch far beyond the capital city.
What NABTEB Said
NABTEB’s Registrar and Chief Executive, Dr Mohammed Aminu Mohammed, called the exercise a turning point for technical education. In his words, the reform shows Nigeria’s will to turn TVET into the “engine” that can drive the country’s economy forward.
He explained that the new syllabus touches both fresh technologies and long-standing trades. The goal is simple: train students to meet Nigeria’s workforce needs and still compete abroad without stumbling.
The 26 Trade Areas Under Review
The trade areas cut across a wide range of fields. Some lean towards emerging tech, while others hold on to the practical skills that have always kept industries moving.
- Robotics, Coding, and Machine Learning
- Industrial Mechanics and Automotive Mechatronics
- Cinematography and Creative Media Production
- Smart Agriculture and Mechanised Agriculture
- Solar PV and Electrical Installations
- Social Media and Digital Communications
- Fisheries and Aquaculture
- Hospitality and Catering
- Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology
These, along with other listed trades, touch on sectors critical to Nigeria’s drive for economic diversification.
Green Programmes In Focus
The Registrar also drew attention to courses designed with the environment in mind. He pointed out Solar PV Installations and Smart Agriculture as clear signs that the Board is blending technology with sustainability. The idea is not just to produce skilled workers, but to prepare a workforce that can face energy and food security challenges head-on.
Closing Thought
This review, Dr Mohammed stressed, is the fruit of close cooperation with the National Board for Technical Education. For now, the eyes of many young Nigerians rest on the outcome. After all, these syllabuses will shape the skills they learn, the jobs they secure, and maybe the future they build.
