Federal Government Subject Choice Guide for WAEC

The Federal Government has shared a clear update on subject selection under the Senior Secondary School Curriculum as WAEC registration continues across the country. The notice responds to questions from students, parents, school leaders and counsellors, as many have raised concerns due to mixed messages seen online. The statement from the Ministry of Education sets out how students can make subject choices with proper guidance.

Key Points from the Ministry of Education

The press update came from the Office of the Director of Press and Public Relations. It carried the views of the Honourable Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa, and the Minister of State for Education, Professor Sa’id Swaiba Ahmad. Both leaders stated that there is no restriction on any approved subject under the curriculum. Students can pick any subject once the choice is guided by their school, parents or trained counsellors.

The Ministry added that a science student may still pick an art or social science subject if it meets their needs. The same applies in the other direction. The design of the curriculum gives room for student interest, skill level and long-term plans.

Update on Digital Technology

Federal Government Position on Subject Changes

The Ministry cleared confusion about the subject once known as Information and Communication Technology. It is now called Digital Technology. Only the name has changed. The content stays the same. A student who studied ICT before this update is free to choose Digital Technology in future exams, including WAEC.

Trade Subjects and Registration Rules

The Ministry shared that six trade subjects are approved under the curriculum. Students may pick any one of them if the school teaches it and the student has been part of the lessons. Where a school does not teach any of these six trades, the student does not need to register a trade subject as a third option.

WAEC registration continues nationwide. Schools are asked to give sound guidance so that each student can pick subjects that match their strengths and plans for further study.
