There’s a date on the calendar the Federal University of Lafia has circled in red — 11 February 2026. On that day, the post of Vice-Chancellor becomes vacant. The Governing Council is already setting the ball rolling, calling on top academics to step forward. This isn’t just about finding a name to fill a slot. It’s about finding someone who can hold the keys to the university’s future.
The campus sits in Lafia, Nasarawa State’s capital, carrying a mandate since 2011 to widen access to higher learning in Nigeria. What began as a new federal university has grown into a busy community, with three Colleges — Medicine, Health Sciences, and Postgraduate Studies — plus fourteen Centres, eighteen Directorates, a School of Basic and Remedial Studies, and sixteen Faculties. Eighty-two undergraduate courses run alongside postgraduate programmes, both regular and online. The place is buzzing.
The role laid bare
The Vice-Chancellor is the chief academic and administrative head, with responsibility stretching from academic growth to the upkeep of the campus. This means using resources wisely, keeping discipline high, and making sure staff and students feel looked after. The role also calls for keeping peace and order, attracting resources, and building bridges beyond the university gates.
Who they’re looking for:
- A PhD or equivalent from a recognised university.
- Career path starting from Assistant Lecturer or Lecturer II up to Professor.
- Academic discipline followed consistently from Bachelor’s to Doctorate.
- At least seven years as a Professor by February 2026.
- Delivered an inaugural lecture.
- Clear grasp of the university’s mission, plus a 1,000-word vision for its next five years.
- Track record in winning research grants from local or international sources.
- Proven honesty in managing funds.
- No record of financial trouble.
- Strong people skills to unite staff, students, and other stakeholders.
- Ability to work with government, local, and international organisations.
- Respect and loyalty from peers.
- Talent for attracting and keeping skilled staff.
- Entrepreneurial spirit to draw extra funding and resources.
- Excellent spoken and written English.
- Ability to uphold the university’s rules.
- ICT skills and commitment to bringing technology into teaching and services.
- Good health, physically and mentally.
Terms and tenure
The post follows the same service conditions as other Vice-Chancellors in federal universities. It runs for one term of five years. Applicants must be under 65 years old when starting.
