Vice-Chancellor Vacancy at FUTO for 2026 Appointment

The post of Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO)will be vacant on 19 June 2026. Under the Federal Universities of Technology Act, Cap. F23, Volume 7, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004, the Governing Council of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri is starting the steps to fill the role.

Applications are invited from interested and suitably qualified candidates for the post of Vice-Chancellor, Federal University of Technology, Owerri.

The University

FUTO was founded in 1980. It was one of the first three Federal Universities of Technology set up by the Federal Government. The campus is about twenty-five kilometres from the centre of Owerri metropolis.

By law, the University can run academic and professional programmes. These lead to diplomas, first degrees, postgraduate research, and higher degrees. The programmes stress planning, adaptive work, technical skills, maintenance, development, and productive skills in engineering, science, agriculture, medical, and related professional fields.

The aim is to produce socially mature men and women who can understand and use existing technology, adapt it, improve it, and also develop new ones.

Mission Statement

FUTO’s mission is to be a world-class University with hands-on training and research. The goal is to move the nation’s economy from buying goods to making goods, with a sound technology base.

The Candidate

A candidate for Vice-Chancellor must have a good University education from a recognised University. The person should also be a good manager of people and resources.

The Vice-Chancellor is the Chief Executive and Academic Officer of the University. The Vice-Chancellor is also the Ex-Officio Chairman of the Senate and Congregation, and a Member of the University Governing Council.

The candidate is expected to meet these points:

  1. The person must be an acclaimed scholar and a Professor of high repute, with suitable academic qualifications. This includes a Ph.D., or for Medical professionals, a Postgraduate Medical Fellowship. The person must also have publications of national and international standard.
  2. The person must be a Professor in a field linked to FUTO’s academic programmes. The person must have at least 15 years of senior academic related experience, with at least 10 years as a Professor. A letter of promotion to Professorship must be attached.
  3. The person should respect merit and support it without fear or favour, even under pressure.
  4. The person should show an enterprising spirit, with proof of ability to attract funds and other resources for the growth of the University.
  5. The person should be able to build harmony between staff and students, and also between the University and host communities.
  6. The person should be able to build good working ties across sections and groups in the University, without ethnic, religious, or other bias.
  7. The person should have a clear vision and a workable plan for the development of the University.
  8. The person must be able to push research in key areas and build working links with respected global universities and industries.
  9. The person must be of probity and integrity.
  10. The person must be able to earn respect and give academic and administrative leadership in the University.
  11. The person must be in strong physical and mental health to handle the pressure of the office. Applicants must submit a medical fitness certificate from a physician in a recognised public health facility.
  12. The person should have a good grasp of information and communication technology skills, and value its place in today’s knowledge work.
  13. The person must be able, at all times, to advise the University Council on matters linked to projects, finances, property, and administration.
  14. The person must not be more than 64 years of age by 19 June 2026, when the position is set to be taken up.

Terms and Conditions of Service Applicable to the Post

The Vice-Chancellor will hold office for a single term of five (5) years only, on terms stated in the letter of appointment. Pay and other service conditions are those that apply to Vice-Chancellors in Nigerian Federal Universities, as set by the Federal Government or the Governing Council of the University, as needed.

Method of Application

Interested candidates who meet the requirements should apply under these conditions:

  1. Each application must be made in thirty (30) copies of the Curriculum Vitae, signed and dated by the candidate, with a passport photograph attached to each copy. Yes, it is thirty copies.
  2. Each Curriculum Vitae must include the names and addresses of three (3) referees. Each applicant must ask each referee to send the Registrar a confidential report on the candidate’s character, academic ability, and management ability. The report must be in a sealed envelope marked “POST OF VICE-CHANCELLOR REFEREES REPORT” at the top left corner.
  3. Each application must include thirty (30) copies of the candidate’s “VISION FOR THE UNIVERSITY/MISSION STATEMENT”.
  4. Where a candidate is identified and nominated by the Search Team, the application must also include a consent letter signed by the candidate.
  5. All applications, Curriculum Vitae, and related papers must be submitted (in person with acknowledgement, or through a recognised courier service) under confidential cover and addressed to:
