About the Harvard Radcliffe Fellowship

The Radcliffe Fellowship Program distinguishes itself by fostering an environment where fellows can break away from their regular routines to explore and challenge scholarly and artistic conventions. Proposals relevant to the Institute’s focus areas, including the unique history and institutional legacy of Radcliffe, climate change and its human impacts, and the legacies of slavery, are particularly welcomed.

The Fellowship Package

Successful fellows receive a stipend of $78,000, supplemented by an additional $5,000 to cover project expenses. US citizens or permanent residents affiliated with a US-based home institution can choose to receive their stipend directly or through their institution.

Beyond the financial support, Harvard Radcliffe fellows might be eligible for additional assistance, such as relocation, housing, and childcare funds, to facilitate a seamless transition to Radcliffe. Also, the institute provides healthcare support as required. If fellows desire to hire Harvard undergraduate students as Research Partners, the institute will cover their hourly wages.

Eligibility Criteria: Who Can Apply

The Harvard Radcliffe Fellowship sets distinct eligibility criteria for applicants based on their fields:

Humanities and Social Sciences: Applicants must have obtained their doctorate or appropriate terminal degree in the area of their proposed project at least two years before their appointment as a fellow. In addition, they must have a publishing record, either a monograph or at least two articles in refereed journals or edited collections.

Science, Engineering, and Mathematics: Like their counterparts in the humanities and social sciences, these applicants must have received their doctorate at least two years prior to their fellowship appointment. Moreover, they should have a robust publishing record, with a minimum of five articles in refereed journals.

Creative Arts: Applicants in this field must meet discipline-specific eligibility requirements, such as exhibiting a body of significant work, maintaining a professional artistic record for at least five years, or having published books or a number of shorter works.

Former Harvard Radcliffe fellows (1999-present) are ineligible to apply.
