LASU Halts Second Semester Exams and Sends Students Home

By  Updated on

Lagos State University has paused its second semester exams and other school activities because of an ongoing staff strike. Students must leave hostels by Monday, 4th August 2025. Here's what you need to know while you wait for updates.

Lagos State University (LASU) Senate Puts 2024/2025 2nd Semester Examinations, Other Socio-Academic Activities on Hold Till Further Notice

On a Saturday that should’ve been quiet, the Lagos State University Senate made a move that shook things up a bit. Not with celebration or fanfare, but with a firm decision made over Zoom. The school’s second semester exams for 2024/2025? On pause. Everything else too.

This wasn’t just a random decision. Something bigger had been brewing behind the scenes.

Why Did This Happen?

Well, to put it simply, staff at LASU are not happy. The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), along with NASU, SSANU, and NAAT — all the big unions on campus — had come together under one umbrella. They call it the Joint Action Committee (JAC), and they went on strike on Thursday, 31st July 2025.

Their complaints? Mostly aimed at the Lagos State Government. Not new, not shocking. But still serious.

The Vice-Chancellor, who also chairs the Senate, gave a rundown during the virtual meeting. He explained how the university’s leadership has been trying, quietly, to talk it out with both the unions and the state. Some progress, maybe. But no clear end in sight yet.

A proper meeting was held at Alausa, chaired by the Head of Service, Mr Olabode Agoro. Representatives from LASU, the state government, and the unions were all there. Everyone talked. At the end, they agreed to meet again on Thursday, 7th August 2025.

So, you get the picture. Talks are happening, but the wheels are still turning slowly.

What’s the Senate Saying?

After reviewing everything, the Senate made it official:

It’s like hitting pause on a video, but without knowing when to press play again.

What About Students in the Hostels?

If you’re staying on campus, especially in Ojo, LASUCOM, Epe or Badagry, better pack your bags.

The Senate gave a deadline: students must leave all university hostels by 6:00 a.m. on Monday, 4th August 2025. Sharp. No leeway.

That means you have just a small window to tidy up, move out and return home. Or anywhere else that’s safe and calm.

So, What Now?

The university isn’t throwing its hands in the air. It’s asking students to stay calm and act responsibly while this plays out. No protests. No drama. Just patience.

This isn’t the first time school strikes have thrown students off balance, and sadly, probably not the last. But while you wait, breathe, rest, or catch up on things you’ve been postponing. Maybe it’s time to finally reply that one unread message or read something that isn’t exam notes.

If the next meeting goes well, maybe classes and exams will return quickly. And if not? Well, eyes on the updates.

Till then, stay safe, no go do pass yourself.
