LASUCOM to Become University of Medicine and Health Sciences

The Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM) will soon transform into a specialised medical university named the University of Medicine and Health Sciences.

This upgrade was announced by the Lagos State Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Tolani Sule, at a recent stakeholders’ meeting.

The State Executive Council has approved the draft law to establish this new university, and it is now set for submission to the Lagos State House of Assembly.

Key Features of the New University

The University of Medicine and Health Sciences will operate across several clinical training facilities within Lagos State.

The Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) will serve as the main clinical training site.

The university will use a network of clinical facilities across the IBILE Administrative divisions to train future medical professionals.

A main campus will be established in Ketu-Ejirin, Epe, which will house administrative buildings and basic medical science programmes.

Government’s Commitment to the Project

Lagos State’s Commissioner for Health, Prof Akin Abayomi, assured the public that the government is dedicated to completing this project.

The new campus will be equipped to support clinical training in general hospitals and private hospitals across Lagos.

The government aims to train a larger number of medical professionals through this innovative approach.

Support from LASUCOM Management

The Provost of LASUCOM, Prof Abiodun Adewuya, expressed gratitude and readiness to support this transition.

He emphasised that the college is fully prepared to collaborate with the government on this new initiative.

This move aligns with Governor Sanwo-Olu’s vision to establish a standalone medical university to strengthen Lagos’ medical infrastructure.

Expected Impact

Governor Sanwo-Olu announced that the medical university will graduate around 1,500 doctors annually.

The university is also expected to set an example for other states in Nigeria.

By developing this specialised institution, Lagos aims to improve healthcare training and reduce the emigration of medical professionals.
