Professor Rasaq Olatunde Rom Kalilu has been officially appointed as the Vice-Chancellor of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) in Ogbomoso, announced by Oyo State governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde. The appointment, confirmed by the state’s Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Salihu Adelabu, was shared with the public on Tuesday from Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

A New Leadership Era at LAUTECH

Starting from June 12, 2024, Professor Kalilu, an esteemed Professor of Art and Art History, will serve a five-year term as Vice-Chancellor. This role marks a significant chapter in his career at LAUTECH, where he has been a dedicated member of the academic community since September 1, 1992. His elevation to a professorship in the Department of Fine and Applied Arts came on October 1, 1999.

Professor Kalilu’s academic journey began at the prestigious University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) and continued at the University of Ibadan. As a polymath and expert in Form and Material Technology, he has made significant contributions to the field. His leadership roles at LAUTECH have been extensive, including Head of Department of Fine and Applied Arts (1998-2003), Dean of Faculty of Environmental Sciences (2003-2006, 2012-2016), and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (2006-2008).

National and International Recognition

His academic prowess has earned him numerous accolades. These include the Gold Medal in the 1978-1979 All Africa Painting Contest and membership in the New York Academy of Sciences. In 1997, he won a Merit Prize in the International Postage Stamp Design Contest and received the Outstanding People of the 20th Century Outstanding Achievement Medal in 2000. His influence is recognised globally, being one of the 1000 Leaders of World Influence for the 21st century.

Professor Kalilu has received many prestigious awards, including the Twentieth Century Achievement Award in 2001 and the Development in Nigeria Merit Award in 2006. His contributions to art and science are further recognised by his memberships in organisations like the Australian Ceramic Society and the International Association of Astronomical Artists. He is also a Fellow of the Society of Nigerian Artists.

Professor Kalilu is a Justice of the Peace in Oyo State. Originally from Ogbomoso, he is married and has children.
