Each student must submit an affidavit and a written undertaking endorsed by a high court to return on May 19th. Learn what steps you'll need to follow to resume classes and meet the Vice-Chancellor's conditions.

MOUAU Mandates Students to Pay Reparation Fee

The Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU) has mandated its students to pay a N25,000 reparation fee as part of the requirements for readmission following a violent demonstration. The protest, which occurred on 6th February 2024, led to the destruction of university property worth millions of naira. As a result, academic activities were suspended, and an investigation committee was established to assess the extent of the damage.

Actions Taken by the University Administration

After a comprehensive investigation, Vice-Chancellor Professor Maduebibisi Ofo Iwe explained that the committee’s findings were thoroughly reviewed before being submitted to the Federal Government for further action. On 3rd May 2024, the government released the final report, providing clearance for the university to resume academic activities on 19th May 2024, while ensuring that each student pays the reparation fee for readmission.

The Vice-Chancellor highlighted that the government specifically directed the immediate resumption of activities following thorough assessment of the report. He stated, “The government released the report on 3rd May and directed that processes towards reopening the institution should commence.”

Conditions for Returning Students

In addition to paying the N25,000 fee, returning students must fulfil several conditions before resuming their studies. These include:

  • Written Undertaking: Each student must provide a written undertaking, endorsed by a high court via affidavit, and submit it to their respective department heads before 19th May. Students should also produce a hard copy of this letter upon arrival.
  • Course Registration: Students must register for their courses promptly, as many had not done so before the protest.
  • Oath of Good Behaviour: The letter of undertaking must pledge that students will adhere to good behaviour and not contravene their matriculation oath. It must be signed and verified in a high court.
  • Outstanding Fees: Any student with outstanding university charges for the 2023/2024 academic session must clear these debts, as partial payments are not allowed.

Conclusion

With these measures in place, the Vice-Chancellor expressed confidence in a smooth transition back to academic normalcy. These steps are designed to ensure that the campus remains orderly, students are properly prepared for their return, and a safe learning environment is maintained at MOUAU.
