The Kano State Executive Council has approved its conversion to Sa’adatu Rimi College of Education, Kumbotso, while keeping its status as a degree-awarding institution.

Why Was the Conversion Made?

The decision was reached during the 18th Council meeting held on September 18, 2024.

The Council conducted thorough consultations with key stakeholders before taking action.

A committee appointed by the state government looked into the university’s status and recommended this change.

Their findings raised concerns about the impact of the university status on the institution’s ability to serve students from non-metropolitan areas.

They also pointed out potential issues such as losing experienced lecturers, salary conflicts, and administrative challenges.

The Council noted that similar institutions across the country have managed to offer degree programmes while remaining colleges of education.

This “dual mode” system, regulated by the NCE Body, allows institutions to balance traditional courses and degree programmes without transitioning into full universities.

What Does This Mean for Students?

Students currently enrolled in Sa’adatu Rimi College of Education will continue their studies without interruption.

The transition will not affect their courses or academic progress.

Additionally, the degrees awarded will remain valid, and students can expect the institution to offer both existing and new degree programmes.

The conversion is intended to streamline management while keeping educational standards high.

Changes in Management

Following the conversion, His Excellency, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, the Executive Governor of Kano State, approved the dissolution of the university’s management.

The Vice-Chancellor has been directed to hand over the administration to the most senior deputy, pending further instructions.

This strategic move ensures that the institution remains focused on delivering quality education.
