West African Examinations Council (WAEC) Clarifies Misleading Report on Subject Restriction for WASSCE 2026

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has addressed recent media reports claiming that the Council restricted Senior Secondary students from choosing specific subjects for the upcoming West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School Candidates 2026.

WAEC stated that it has not issued any directive limiting subject selection for candidates. The Council described the circulating information as incorrect and urged the public to disregard it.

According to WAEC, its role is to conduct examinations and ensure fair assessment based on government-approved curricula. The development and regulation of curricula in Nigeria remain the responsibility of the Federal Government, not WAEC.

WAEC Reaffirms Its Role in Educational Assessment

The Council explained that it operates strictly under established laws and national policies. Any change or update to the school curriculum is introduced through the Federal Government and not arbitrarily by WAEC. The body works to maintain transparency, professionalism, and fairness in all examination processes.

Schools, parents, and students are encouraged to rely only on official communications from the Council for accurate updates regarding the WASSCE for School Candidates 2026. False or misleading information circulating online should be ignored.

WAEC assured all stakeholders that every student participating in the upcoming examination will be given an equal chance for success, in line with its commitment to integrity and excellence in assessment.
