FUWUKARI Gets Green Light to Admit MBBS Students Again

MDCN Grants Accreditation

Federal University Wukari (FUWUKARI), Taraba State, can now admit students into its Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programme. After years of waiting, the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) has given the university provisional pre-clinical accreditation.

The MDCN team visited the school on 3 July 2025 for a full assessment. Following the visit, the council sent a letter dated 8 July 2025, signed by its Registrar, Prof. Fatima Kyari. The letter confirmed the approval and lifted the ban on admitting new medical students.

This means FUWUKARI will start taking fresh MBBS students again from the 2025/2026 academic session.

What the Approval Covers

MDCN’s letter gave the go-ahead for pre-clinical training. But it also asked the school to alert the council before any future Part I MBBS exams, so observers from the council can attend. This helps keep training up to standard.

Behind the Scenes

This approval didn’t fall from the sky. The school’s management, medical faculty, and support staff have been working behind the scenes for years to meet MDCN’s conditions. The accreditation reflects their effort.

The Provost of the College of Medical Sciences thanked the MDCN for its support during the process. He also praised the people who stayed committed and made it happen.

What This Means Going Forward

With the ban lifted, FUWUKARI can now train doctors again. This is a big win not just for the school, but also for Taraba and the wider North-East, where the need for healthcare workers remains high.

The university expects fresh interest from students who want to study medicine but couldn’t apply before.

This move helps close the gap in Nigeria’s healthcare sector by expanding access to medical education within the country.

FUWUKARI now prepares to welcome its next batch of medical students, while staff and students alike look forward to a fresh chapter in the school’s story.
