The National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, has opened entries for the National Essay Competition 2026.
The competition is set to build emergency preparedness, disaster awareness and resilience among Nigeria's youth. For many applicants, the first question is simple; who can enter and what topic fits each group?

NEMA essay competition categories and topics
The competition has three categories and each one comes with its own theme.
Senior Secondary School
Topic: "My Role in Disaster Risk Reduction"
Students in tertiary institutions
Topic: "Climate Change and Disaster Management in Nigeria"
NYSC "Emergency Management Vanguards" corps members
Topic: "Technology for Disaster Response: Opportunities and Challenges"
Cash prizes for winners
Winners will receive cash prizes in three places:
- First Place: N500,000
- First Runner Up: N300,000
- Second Runner Up: N200,000
That prize list is clear and it gives each category real weight.
Submission rules and eligibility
Interested participants must follow the stated rules for their entries to count.
Format for essays
Entries must be submitted as a Word document in Times New Roman, size 12 font.
Word count
- Senior Secondary School category: maximum 500 words
- All other categories: maximum 1,000 words
Entry limit
Only one entry is allowed per individual.
Details to include
Each entry must carry the participant's full name, category and details of school or NYSC deployment.

All entries should be sent to nemaessay@nema.gov.ng.
How NEMA will assess entries
The judging criteria follow a weighted scale:
- 40% for content relevance and depth
- 30% for originality and creativity
- 30% for structure, grammar and style
That breakdown gives a clear picture of what the judges will look for; content leads, but writing quality still holds its place.
NEMA essay competition deadline
The deadline for submission is 15 April 2026.
Entries sent after that date or entries that do not meet the stated conditions, will not be considered. That Date sits at the heart of the notice.
