The Governing Council of the University of Jos has approved the advertisement of the office of Vice-Chancellor, as the position will be vacant on 1 December 2026.

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates with the required qualifications and cognate experience.

The position of Vice-Chancellor at the University of Jos will become vacant on 1 December 2026.

The Governing Council approved the advertisement under the University of Jos Act, CAP U8, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, as amended by the Universities (Miscellaneous Provisions) (Amendment) Act, 2003 and the Conditions and Scheme of Service for Senior Staff.

The University of Jos started as the Jos Campus of the University of Ibadan in 1971 and became a full-fledged university in 1975.

The university is situated in Jos, Plateau State.

It offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes across 19 faculties, including Agriculture, Arts, Computing, Education, Engineering, Environmental Sciences, Law, Management, Medical and Health Sciences, Natural Sciences, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Social Sciences and Veterinary Medicine.

The university has 34,735 full-time undergraduate students and 2,941 postgraduate students.

The Vice-Chancellor will coordinate the activities of the university and serve as Chief Executive, Chief Academic and Chief Accounting Officer.

The Vice-Chancellor must be a person with a clear vision for the further development of the University of Jos.

Good interpersonal and team-building skills are required; the successful candidate will be expected to build productive links among staff, students, alumni, the university community, host communities and stakeholders.

What Duties Will the Vice-Chancellor Perform?

The Vice-Chancellor will be responsible to the Governing Council for the day-to-day management of the human, financial and material resources of the university.

All other administrative offices will be responsible to the Vice-Chancellor.

The Vice-Chancellor will also be expected to:

• Uphold the laws, statutes ordinances and regulations of the university
• Provide strategic leadership and vision
• Understand the vision and mission of the University of Jos
• Maintain good order and sound operations
• Exercise lawful authority where required
• Promote high standards in research, teaching and learning
• Support student admission, welfare and discipline

What Qualifications Must Applicants Possess?

Applicants must possess a good university education from a recognised university.

They must have at least 15 years of unbroken teaching and research experience in a recognised university system, with at least 10 years as a highly distinguished scholar at the rank of Professor as at the date of the advertisement.

What Academic and Work Experience Is Required?

Applicants must have a current teaching and research position in a recognised university of equal standing with the University of Jos.

They must also show evidence of funded research grants and research collaborations with local and international agencies.

What Leadership and Administrative Skills Are Required?

Candidates must show strong leadership skills and the capacity to provide academic, administrative, research and managerial direction.

They must also have the experience needed to lead the university, attract extra-statutory funds, mobilise resources and support the development of teaching and non-teaching staff.

Applicants must be widely respected within the academic community at national and international levels.

They must show personal integrity in the management of funds and must be able to deploy financial resources properly.

The successful candidate must avoid personal, racial, ethnic, political, religious or sectional interests.

Applicants must have excellent written and spoken communication skills.

They must also be proficient in Information, Communication and Technology skills, be committed to digital skills development and be members of a relevant professional body.

Applicants must not be above 64 years of age on 1 December 2026.

What Is the Tenure of the Vice-Chancellor?

The appointment will be for a single term of five years.

The tenure is non-renewable.

What Salary and Benefits Will Apply?

The remuneration and other benefits will be as approved by the Federal Government for Nigerian federal universities.

The Governing Council of the University of Jos may also determine benefits from time to time.

Copies of relevant academic and professional qualifications should be attached.

What Vision Statement Is Required?

Each application must include 15 copies of the candidate's Statement of Vision.

The statement must be in PDF format and must not exceed 1,000 words.

The statement should explain how the candidate will drive the University of Jos over the next five years as a 21st-century university.

How Should Referee Reports Be Sent?

Candidates must provide the names and addresses of three referees who can attest to their character, professional ability and administrative ability.

The referees should send confidential reports in sealed envelopes marked "Post of Vice-Chancellor: Referees Report" at the top left corner of the envelope.

How Should the Application Package Be Marked?

Applications should be submitted in soft and hard copies under confidential cover.

When Is the Closing Date?
