NECO sets final deadline for 2026 SSCE registration

The National Examinations Council, NECO, has said there will be no extension for the registration of candidates for the 2026 Senior Secondary Certificate Examination, SSCE.

The notice came in a statement signed by the Registrar and Chief Executive of NECO, Professor Dantani Wushishi. It reminded schools, proprietors, principals, and commandants of secondary schools to complete candidate registration within the approved dates.

Dates schools must note

NECO gave two clear deadlines for the 2026 SSCE registration process.

Normal registration closes on Monday, 25 May 2026.

Late registration closes on Friday, 29 May 2026.

The statement said: “The last date for the normal registration of candidates by schools is Monday, 25th May 2026, while the deadline for late registration is Friday, 29th May 2026, with no further extension.”

No extra time after late registration

NECO made its position plain; there will be no further extension after the late registration window closes.

That notice applies to schools, school owners, principals, and commandants handling candidate entries for the 2026 SSCE cycle. The council urged all concerned parties to keep strictly to the timetable so candidates can be registered on time.

Why the deadline matters

The registrar said meeting these dates supports the smooth conduct of the SSCE.

The examination remains a major national exam used in decisions linked to tertiary education, scholarships, and other post-secondary openings. A missed registration deadline may stop a candidate from sitting the examination; that can affect academic progress.

What schools should do now

Schools are expected to complete all registration steps within the normal or late registration period, depending on their stage in the process.

NECO’s message is direct and firm. The council said it is keeping stakeholders informed of key dates while pushing for a smoother exam process across the 2026 SSCE cycle.
