BUK NELFUND Deadline Extended to 15 April 2026

Bayero University, Kano, BUK, has issued a circular on concerns and false claims linked to the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, NELFUND. The notice addresses monthly upkeep payment, the student loan process, and the new application deadline.

The statement came from the Directorate of Public Affairs. In it, the university set out what NELFUND beneficiary students need to know; it also asked students to ignore misleading reports and follow only updates released through the university.

BUK speaks on NELFUND monthly upkeep payment

BUK said the payment of monthly upkeep allowance rests solely with NELFUND, even though the scheme runs under the guidance of the university.

The circular stated that the allowance follows the official NELFUND calendar, which runs from January to December each year. For that reason, the upkeep allowance for the 2024/2025 academic session ended in December 2025.

The university also said there is no outstanding payment for that session.

What BUK said about unpaid upkeep claims

The university told students that no unpaid upkeep remains for the 2024/2025 session. It added that each student’s payment record will be reviewed and updated on the student’s loan dashboard.

That point matters; the record update will happen on each beneficiary’s dashboard.

When 2025/2026 NELFUND payment will start

BUK said payment for the 2025/2026 session will begin only after key steps have been completed.

These steps include:

• data upload
• application processing
• verification
• disbursement of institutional charges

Until those steps are done, payment for the new session will not begin.

Update on BUK student loan application process

The university said returning students who received the loan in the previous session have been moved automatically to the Students Loan Application System, SLAS, for the 2025/2026 academic session.

For newly admitted students in the 2024/2025 session, BUK said their data had earlier been sent to NELFUND. Still, many students were not uploaded successfully because of technical problems on the NELFUND portal.

To deal with that, the university has started manual uploads so that all eligible students can be captured.

BUK gets new NELFUND loan deadline

BUK also said it secured an extension of the loan application deadline from NELFUND.

The new deadline is 15 April 2026.

What students should keep in mind

The message from BUK is direct. NELFUND handles monthly upkeep payment; the 2024/2025 upkeep cycle ended in December 2025, with no unpaid balance for that session.

The university has also moved returning student beneficiaries to SLAS, started manual uploads for affected newly admitted students, and fixed 15 April 2026 as the new loan application deadline. Students are expected to rely on university notices, not stray claims Online.
