Nikon Small World Competition 2025

The Nikon Small World Competition invites entries from people who work with light microscopes.

You can submit still images or motion clips taken through a light microscope.

The contest rewards the best work in science and art using microscope tools.

Choose from two contest types

There are two parts to the competition:

• Photomicrography for still images
• Motion Video for short films or time-lapse clips

Win from the prize pool

Photomicrography Awards

• 1st Place: $3,000
• 2nd Place: $2,000
• 3rd Place: $1,000
• 4th Place: $800
• 5th Place: $600
• 6th Place: $500
• 7th to 10th Place: $400 each
• 11th to 20th Place: $300 each
• Honour Mentions: $200 each

Motion Video Awards

• 1st Place: $3,000
• 2nd Place: $2,000
• 3rd Place: $1,000
• 4th Place: $800
• 5th Place: $600
• Honour Mentions: $200 each

Follow the entry rules

You may enter up to three works per contest.

Each photo or video must follow all technical and content rules.

Meet the rules for still image entries

• Use .jpeg, .png, .psd or .tiff format.
• Send files with the best size and resolution.
• Use a light microscope (not electron or macro).
• Nikon tools are not required.
• AI images are not allowed.
• You must be the one who took the image.
• Do not enter a photo that has won another contest.
• Work must be in English.
• Do not include logos, web links, private details or harmful content.

Follow the rules for video entries

• Use .mp4, .mpg, .wmv, .avi or .mov format.
• Each video must be under 60 seconds.
• Sound, graphics and effects are not allowed.
• Videos must be clear and taken through a light microscope.
• AI videos are not allowed.
• Nikon tools are not required.
• Do not enter a video that has won another contest.
• Follow all other rules that apply to still image entries.

The last date to send entries is 30 April 2025.
