NUC Approves 5 New Programmes for UNIMAID (2026)

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has granted approval to the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) for five new undergraduate programmes at the University’s main campus.
The approval came through an official letter dated February 3, 2026; it was signed by Abubakar M. Girei, Director of Academic Planning, for the Executive Secretary. The decision followed a successful resource verification visit by a panel of experts who checked the human and material resources available for the proposed courses.
Approved Programmes (Full-Time)
NUC approved these full-time undergraduate programmes:
- B.Sc. Water Sanitation and Hygiene
- B.Sc. Journalism and Media Studies
- B.Sc. Broadcasting
- B.Sc. Local Government and Development Studies
- B.A. History and Diplomatic Studies
When the New Programmes Will Start
NUC approved the programmes to commence from the 2025/2026 academic session; students and staff should treat that session as the effective start date.
Terms: Full-Time Only
NUC stated that the approval covers full-time mode only. Before UNIMAID can run any of the programmes on a part-time basis, the University must seek further processing and notification from the Commission.
NUC’s Note on Approved Titles
NUC stated in the letter:
“The programmes shall bear only the approved titles and nomenclature and any change will require the approval of the Commission.”
What UNIMAID Was Told to Maintain
UNIMAID has been enjoined to keep providing adequate resources for the steady development and growth of the newly approved departments; the expectation covers both human and material resources.
