Flood Destroys Property at UI Student Hostels

The University of Ibadan (UI) is facing challenges as heavy flooding has caused severe damage to student hostels. The incident has left students dealing with significant losses, including books, food, and personal belongings. This unexpected situation has created a lot of concern within the university community.

Flood Hits UI Student Hostels, Causes Major Damage

On Friday, a flood swept through parts of the University of Ibadan, causing extensive damage. The incident affected several areas, with property losses estimated to be worth millions of naira. Many students have lost essential items, including documents and study materials.

Among the most affected areas was Awo Hostel, where the flood submerged about 16 rooms on the underground floor. Students’ property, including books, foodstuffs, and personal belongings, was seen floating in the water.

Extensive Damage in Student Rooms

One student explained that the flood took over the rooms, toilets, kitchens, and all entrances to the hostel. The impact was even more challenging for those who were not around at the time, as the flood damaged everything they owned.

Another student shared how the flood entered a friend’s room, destroying everything, including items kept in cupboards. The losses have left many students with little to fall back on, and the situation is difficult for those relying on these materials for ongoing exams.

The flood has highlighted the need for proper measures to prevent future occurrences, ensuring students can continue their studies without disruptions or fear of losing their belongings.
