Postgraduate Diploma (PGD)

• Duration:
  • Minimum: 2 semesters
  • Maximum: 4 semesters
• Entry rules:
  • A first degree with at least Third Class, or
  • An HND with at least Lower Credit in a related field from a recognised higher education body
  • NYSC Discharge or Exemption Certificate
  • Five O’ Level credits, including:
    • English Language
    • Mathematics
    • Three other relevant subjects
• Special rule for Centre for Safety Management:
  • Applicants with strong work experience in:
    • Occupational safety
    • Process safety
    • Workplace safety
    • Related safety fields
  • Or holders of relevant professional safety certifications with clear industry experience
  • May be considered for PGD programmes even where their first degree path is different, as long as it fits the safety field.

Master’s Degree (Academic and Professional)

Master’s programmes run as both full-time and part-time. All Master’s options include coursework.

• Duration:
  • Full-time: minimum 4 semesters, maximum 6 semesters
  • Part-time: minimum 6 semesters, maximum 11 semesters
• Basic entry rules:
  • Graduates of Federal University Lokoja or any other recognised university with:
    • At least Second Class Division or equivalent in a relevant Bachelor’s degree
  • Or a university degree plus a relevant Postgraduate Diploma from FULOKOJA or another recognised university, with at least a credit pass
  • Candidates with Third Class Bachelor’s degree plus a relevant Postgraduate Diploma
  • Candidates with unclassified degrees with average grade “C” or 50 and above
    • Such candidates may be asked to sit for qualifying tests
  • Five relevant O’ Level credits, including:
    • English Language
    • Mathematics
  • NYSC Discharge or Exemption Certificate
  • Candidates may be required to sit for a Departmental examination to test readiness for postgraduate study
  • Other acceptable qualifications as approved by the University Senate

Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Molecular Biology and Genomics

This programme runs under the Global Institute for Infectious Diseases Control (FULokoja).

Entry rules:

• A Bachelor of Science degree from a Nigerian university recognised by the Senate of Federal University Lokoja, in any of the following or related fields:
  • Medicine
  • Pharmacy
  • Medical Laboratory Science
  • Nursing
  • Microbiology
  • Biochemistry
  • Related disciplines
• Minimum of Second Class Lower Division in the first degree
• Or Upper Credit in PGD Microbiology from:
  • Federal University Lokoja, or
  • Any other university recognised by the Senate of FULokoja

Master’s programmes under the Centre for Safety Management

Entry rules:

• Bachelor’s degree from a recognised university in any of these or related fields:
  • Engineering
  • Environmental Sciences
  • Physical Sciences
  • Health Sciences
  • Management Sciences
• Or PGD in:
  • Safety
  • Environmental Management
  • Risk Management
  • Related safety or environment fields
    from a recognised higher education body
• At least two years of professional work in a safety-related field is desirable
• Membership of a recognised professional safety body is an added advantage, but not compulsory

Master’s programmes under the Institute for Gender Studies (IGS)

Entry rules:

• Bachelor’s degree with at least Second Class Lower in:
  • Gender Studies
  • Social Sciences
  • Humanities
  • Related fields
• Relevant work experience in gender-focused work is an added advantage

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

• Duration:
  • Minimum: 6 semesters
  • Maximum: 10 semesters

PhD students may be asked to take some relevant courses, and every candidate must submit a thesis at the end of the programme.

• Entry rules:
  • A good Master’s degree (academic) from Federal University Lokoja or another recognised university, with CGPA:
    • Not less than 4.0 on a 5-point scale, or
    • Not less than 3.0 on a 4-point scale
      in a field that matches the proposed area of study
  • Or a Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) degree in a field that fits the area of study
  • Bachelor’s degree with at least Second Class Lower Division
  • Five relevant O’ Level credits, including:
    • English Language
    • Mathematics
  • NYSC Discharge or Exemption Certificate
  • Other acceptable qualifications as may be approved by the University Senate
