UNIBEN Postgraduate Admission Form 2026/2027: Requirements, Fees and Deadline

Applications have been invited from suitably qualified candidates for admission into postgraduate programmes at the University of Benin, UNIBEN, for the 2026/2027 academic session.

The available postgraduate study routes lead to the award of Postgraduate Diploma, Master's degree, Master of Philosophy and Doctor of Philosophy across various Schools, Faculties, Institutes and Centres of the University.

The UNIBEN postgraduate admission form covers programmes leading to the following awards:

What Are the General Admission Requirements?

A candidate for postgraduate studies at the University of Benin must have at least five credits in WASC, NECO, GCE Ordinary Level or their equivalents.

The University may also consider four credits at Ordinary Level, plus OND, not pass, NCE, IJMB, Advanced Level passes or any other equivalent qualification. This requirement should be checked against the intended programme before the form is submitted.

Who Is Ineligible for UNIBEN Postgraduate Admission?

A holder of a Pass Degree or Pass Diploma is ineligible for admission into the postgraduate programme of the University of Benin.

Holders of third class degrees must possess a Postgraduate Diploma before they can be considered for admission into Master's programmes.

What Are the Requirements for M.Phil. Admission?

Candidates who have obtained a Master's degree with a Weighted Average Score, WAS, between 55% and 59% may be considered for admission into the M.Phil. programme first.

This means such candidates will be considered for M.Phil. admission before any further progression, subject to the relevant postgraduate admission process.

What Are the Requirements for PhD Admission?

A candidate applying for PhD admission into any programme of the University of Benin must have obtained a minimum Weighted Average Score of 60% at Master's degree level.

A candidate applying for PhD admission with a Master's degree from another university, who has not previously taken the compulsory courses or their equivalents similar to those at the University of Benin, will be required to offer and pass such courses with a minimum score of 60% after admission.

Is NYSC Required for UNIBEN Postgraduate Clearance?

Only students who have the NYSC discharge, exemption or exclusion certificate can be cleared into the postgraduate programme of the University of Benin.

Candidates should ensure that the required NYSC document is available for clearance, since admission processing and final clearance are separate stages.

Are Referee Reports Required?

Referee reports are required for UNIBEN postgraduate applications.

Candidates should print the referee forms provided on the application page, fill them and return them directly to the Secretary, School of Postgraduate Studies. Applications will be processed only after the referee reports are available.

Will There Be a Written Entrance Examination?
