WAEC WASSCE Delay 2026 Explained: Maths & Agric Sci

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has addressed reports on the delayed conduct of the Mathematics and Agricultural Science papers in some centres during the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School Candidates, 2026.

The Council stated that the delay was caused by a combination of logistical and operational challenges, including a fatal motor accident involving WAEC personnel, regional security issues, late registration of candidates and final decisions on the mode of examination conduct.

WAEC received reports that the conduct of the Mathematics and Agricultural Science papers was delayed in some centres and the Council stated that preliminary investigations began at once to find the cause and prevent a repeat during the remaining period of the examination.

• Regional security challenges affecting the distribution schedule
• Issues linked to finalising the mode of examination conduct
• Late registration of candidates, which affected the preparation of examination materials
• Mass protests linked to the abduction of school children, which affected movement and distribution

What Did WAEC Say About The Accident Involving Its Personnel?

WAEC stated that three of its personnel died in a motor accident on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, while they were transporting sensitive examination materials interstate.

The Council described the loss as heartbreaking and stated that the accident, together with regional security challenges, affected its distribution schedule and led to delayed start times in some centres.

Were The Affected Examinations Cancelled?

WAEC stated that its staff deployed emergency contingency measures to ensure that the examination was still conducted in the affected areas.

The notice did not state that the affected papers were cancelled.

WAEC stated that the finalisation of the mode of conduct for the examination and the late registration of candidates affected the timely preparation of examination materials.
