WAEC WASSCE Delay 2026: Council Explains Mathematics And Agricultural Science Paper Delays

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has addressed reports on the delayed conduct of the Mathematics and Agricultural Science papers in some centres during the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School Candidates, 2026.

The Council stated that the delay was caused by a combination of logistical and operational challenges, including a fatal motor accident involving WAEC personnel, regional security issues, late registration of candidates and final decisions on the mode of examination conduct.

What Happened During The 2026 WASSCE In Some Centres?

WAEC received reports that the conduct of the Mathematics and Agricultural Science papers was delayed in some centres and the Council stated that preliminary investigations began at once to find the cause and prevent a repeat during the remaining period of the examination.

WAEC linked the delay to logistical and operational issues that affected the distribution and preparation of sensitive examination materials.

WAEC stated that three of its personnel died in a motor accident on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, while they were transporting sensitive examination materials interstate.

The Council described the loss as heartbreaking and stated that the accident, together with regional security challenges, affected its distribution schedule and led to delayed start times in some centres.

WAEC stated that its staff deployed emergency contingency measures to ensure that the examination was still conducted in the affected areas.

The notice did not state that the affected papers were cancelled.
