AKSU Gets Approval for New Faculty of Law

Akwa Ibom State University (AKSU) Receives NUC Approval To Start a New Faculty of Law for the 2025/2026 Session

Akwa Ibom State University, known as AKSU, has received approval from the National Universities Commission to start a Faculty of Law. This step adds to its growing list of academic fields and gives students a new path to study law at a public university in the state.

What the Approval Means

The NUC gave this approval after a resource check at the main campus. The panel looked at staff strength, buildings, classrooms and other basic needs for a law programme.

In a letter dated 10 November 2025 and sent to the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor OtoAbasi E. Akpan, the NUC confirmed that AKSU can begin the full-time Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) programme from the 2025/2026 session. The letter was clear that the programme will run at the main campus.

The NUC also asked the university to keep providing the staff, study materials and facilities needed for long-term growth. This must follow the Core Curriculum and Minimum Academic Standards for universities in Nigeria.

How the New Faculty of Law Will Be Set Up

The new Faculty of Law will have three departments:

Private and Property Law

This area covers rules about ownership, family matters and rights between people.

Jurisprudence and International Law

Students will study legal ideas and the rules that guide links between countries.

Commercial and Industrial Law

This field deals with trade, business and labour matters.
