The Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, has experienced major leadership changes following the Federal Government's decision to dissolve its Governing Council.
This action addresses serious violations of the laws governing the university and the Council's failure to comply with directives from the Federal Ministry of Education.

Reasons for Dissolution
The Governing Council was found to have unilaterally appointed a Vice-Chancellor who did not meet the minimum eligibility criteria for the position.
This decision caused disruption and tension within the university community.
The Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, stated that urgent steps were required to stabilise the institution and restore order.
The actions of the Governing Council were deemed a significant risk to the governance and harmony of the university.
Members Removed
The following members of the Governing Council have been removed as part of this decision:
- Amb. Greg Ozumba Mbadiwe (Pro-Chancellor)
- Hon. Hafiz Oladejo
- Hon. Augustine Onyedebelu
- Engr. Amioleran Osahon
- Rtd Gen. Funsho Oyeneyin
Removal of the Vice-Chancellor
The Federal Government has also removed Prof. Bernard Odoh, who was appointed as Vice-Chancellor by the dissolved Governing Council.
This appointment was declared illegal and not in compliance with the university's founding act.
Appointment of New Leadership
An Acting Vice-Chancellor will be appointed in line with the provisions of the university's founding act.
The Federal Government will constitute a new Governing Council to oversee the institution's governance.
These actions aim to ensure proper administration and adherence to the law.
Immediate Implementation
All changes take immediate effect.
This decision reflects the Federal Government's commitment to accountability, good governance and the rule of law in educational institutions.
These measures are expected to restore stability and promote effective governance at Nnamdi Azikiwe University.
