Oba of Benin Installed as Chancellor at NOUN's 13th Convocation

In a significant ceremonial event, the Oba of Benin, Omo N’Oba N’Edo, Uku Akpolokpolo, Ewuare II, has recently been appointed and formally installed as the third Chancellor of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN). This prestigious title was conferred upon him by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, marking a landmark in the university’s history.

The formal installation took place during NOUN’s 13th Convocation Ceremony on Saturday, April 13, 2024, at the Convocation Arena located at the university’s headquarters in Jabi, Abuja. This event not only highlights the traditional and ceremonial aspects but also underscores the significant connections between Nigeria’s educational advancements and its cultural heritage.

Ewuare II succeeds His Royal Highness Agabaidu, Elias Ikoyi Obekpa, Och’Idoma IV, who previously held the position. The ceremony was marked by the awarding of an Honorary Doctor of Public Administration (D.P.A) honoris causa to the monarch, emphasising his contributions and potential impact on the realm of public administration and education.

Expressing his gratitude, Ewuare II reflected on the profound responsibility and honour associated with his new role. He acknowledged the trust and privilege bestowed upon him by the President and praised the concerted efforts of the Honourable Minister of Education in making the event a reality. His appreciation extended to the Vice-Chancellor of NOUN, Prof. Olufemi Peters, and the entire management team, whose dedication has been pivotal in elevating the university’s status on a global scale.

Since its inception, NOUN has seen a lineage of distinguished chancellors, starting with His Royal Majesty, Igwe Lawrence Agubuzu, and followed by Elias Ikoyi Obekpa.
