Candidates must also meet the minimum first degree and postgraduate entry rules for their chosen area of study. Renaissance University accepts graduates of the university and graduates of other recognised universities who meet the stated conditions.

Postgraduate Diploma Admission Requirements

Renaissance University may consider candidates with a bachelor’s degree of at least Third Class Honours and a minimum GPA of 2.0 on a 5-point scale.

HND holders may also apply if they have a Grade Point Average of 3.50 on a 5-point scale or its equivalent. For Postgraduate Diploma in Business Administration, candidates with professional qualifications such as Associate Institute of Bankers, Associate Certified Chartered Accountants, Associate Cost and Management Accountants, Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria, Chartered Professional Accountants, Associate Chartered Institute of Accountants, and Association of National Accountants of Nigeria may have an added advantage.

Candidates with HND or professional qualifications still need the basic university entry record. That includes five credits in WASC, GCE O’Level or NECO for admission into degree courses in their departments.

The university may also consider special cases after candidates pass tests set by the department or faculty. Applicants with other qualifications judged equivalent and accepted by the Board of Postgraduate Studies and Senate may also receive consideration.

Master’s Degree Admission Requirements

Renaissance University offers Master’s programmes such as M.A, M.Sc., MBA and MPA.

Applicants may qualify if they hold a bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline from Renaissance University or another recognised university, with at least Second Class Honours and not less than 2.50 GPA.

Candidates with relevant Postgraduate Diplomas from Renaissance University or another recognised university may also apply if they have at least credit-level passes with a minimum GPA of 3.5 on a 5-point scale or 3.0 on a 4-point scale.

The university may consider candidates with unclassified first degrees if they have an average score of 50% or above.

For M.Ed. degree programmes, candidates need at least a good Second Class single honours degree in teaching subjects with at least Merit in Postgraduate Diploma in Education. Candidates with Third Class Honours in teaching subjects may also qualify if they hold a Postgraduate Diploma in Education passed at credit level or above.

For MPA, applicants should be serving administrative or managerial staff in the public or private sector. They must also have at least two years of post-qualification cognate experience.

Holders of professional fellowship qualifications such as FIMLT, FNILT, NIPR or their equivalents obtained through examination may also be considered. Such candidates must have worked as Senior Technologists or in equivalent positions for at least three years.

The notice also states that candidates with other qualifications accepted by the Senate of the University of Nigeria may be considered.

PhD Admission Requirements

Candidates from Renaissance University or other recognised universities may apply for Doctorate admission if they hold a Master’s degree suited to their proposed area of study.

For most departments, applicants need a minimum GPA of 3.5 on a 5-point scale or 3.0 on a 4-point scale. Some departments and faculties require a higher mark.

A minimum GPA of 4.0 on a 5-point scale applies to PhD programmes in Music, Economics, Public Administration and Local Government, Psychology, Faculties of Education, Medical Sciences, Health Sciences and Technology, and Business Administration.

The notice also states that a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4-point scale or a B average of 60% at Master’s level may apply, provided the Master’s degree included satisfactory research work.

Master’s/PhD Admission Route

Renaissance University may admit a candidate with First Class Honours from a recognised university into a Master’s/PhD programme in the candidate’s discipline.

A candidate with a Master’s degree from a recognised university and at least 3.50 GPA on a 5-point scale, or 3.00 on a 4-point scale, may also qualify for Master’s/PhD admission in a related area or department. A candidate who does not qualify for PhD admission because of low GPA does not qualify for the Master’s/PhD route.

For faculties and departments where PhD admission requires a Master’s GPA of 4.00 on a 5-point scale and above, applicants with a Master’s GPA of 3.50 and above, but below 4.00, may apply for Master’s/PhD admission. After completing Master’s coursework set by the department, the candidate may qualify for firm PhD registration if the candidate earns a GPA of 4.00 in the Master’s courses.

Note for Master’s/PhD Candidates

A candidate admitted into the Master’s/PhD programme has two options.

The candidate may complete the Master’s degree and then apply to continue with the Doctoral programme without a fresh application form, if the Master’s degree is passed with the required GPA of 3.50 or 4.00 on a 5-point scale, depending on the department or faculty.

The second option depends on performance after the first two semesters of Master’s/PhD coursework. If the student earns a GPA of 3.50 or 4.00 and above, as required by the department or faculty, Senate may approve movement to the PhD programme on the recommendation of the Departmental and Faculty Postgraduate Studies Committees and the Board of the School.

Duration of Postgraduate Programmes

The Postgraduate Diploma regular programme runs for two semesters.

For regular Master’s degree programmes, the minimum duration is three semesters for full-time students and five semesters for part-time students in all departments and faculties except the listed exceptions in the university’s notice.
