UNN Medical School quota rises to 400 after MDCN approval

The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, MDCN, has approved a major rise in the admission quota for the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, UNN, Medical School. The school’s carrying capacity moved from 180 to 400 students.

The approval came on 27 March 2026 after a re-accreditation exercise and months of preparation by the University management. With this new figure, UNN now holds the highest approved quota for medical training in Nigeria.

Why UNN asked for a quota review

University management made a formal appeal for a higher quota. The case rested on two points; a sharp rise in demand from highly qualified candidates, and heavy investment in the Faculty of Clinical Sciences.

That request led to a closer review of the school’s readiness. The result has now changed the number of students the medical school can admit.

MDCN inspection and what the team checked

A few weeks before the approval, an MDCN assessment team carried out an onsite evaluation at UNN. The team checked the school’s facilities, with attention on modern training equipment, laboratory standards, and the strength of the academic staff.

The review formed part of the process that ended with the new quota.

What the Dean said

Professor Christopher Bismarck Eke, Dean of the Faculty of Clinical Sciences, said the faculty met and exceeded the Council’s baseline for the review.

In his words, “We had more than the basic facilities and human resources the Council required for the review.”

He also thanked the people linked to the outcome. He named the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Simon Uchenna Ortuanya, the leadership of the College of Medicine, alumni, current staff, and students.

What the new quota means

The Dean said the approval goes beyond UNN alone; he tied it to the shortage of healthcare professionals in Nigeria. By lifting its intake from 180 to 400, the University aims to add more high-quality medical graduates to the country’s health workforce.

The new capacity also strengthens UNN’s standing as a centre for academic and professional development in West Africa.

When the new quota starts

The expanded quota is expected to take effect immediately. That means hundreds of extra aspiring doctors may now gain a place for medical training at UNN.
