Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, has announced a flexible tuition fee payment platform for newly admitted postgraduate students.
The Postgraduate College Board approved the plan for students admitted into academic postgraduate programmes, covering Master’s and PhD degrees. The arrangement gives eligible students a structured way to pay tuition fees within the academic session, rather than paying the full amount at once.
The plan is optional.
Why ABU Introduced the Flexible Payment Plan
ABU introduced the payment option as a special concession, given the current economic realities affecting many students.
The plan responds to students who may struggle to make full tuition payment at the start of the academic session; at the same time, it keeps the payment schedule clear enough for proper university administration. It also supports access to postgraduate education without removing the need for students to meet fee deadlines.
That balance matters.
Who the ABU Payment Plan Covers
The flexible payment platform currently applies to newly admitted students in academic postgraduate programmes.
This covers:
- Academic Master’s degrees
- PhD degrees
Professional postgraduate programmes are not part of the plan at this stage.
Students in professional programmes should take note of that limit, since the approved arrangement does not cover all postgraduate categories.
How the ABU Flexible Tuition Payment Works
Students who choose the plan will pay their tuition in stages during the academic session.
Under the approved arrangement, a student will pay 50% of the approved tuition fee after admission, and that first payment allows the student to register first semester courses and take part in lectures and academic activities. The student must then reach at least 80% payment before second semester begins.
The last stage comes before second semester examinations.
To print examination cards and sit for second semester examinations, the student must pay the full tuition fee, which means 100% settlement before the end of the second semester.
Payment Stages for New Postgraduate Students
The payment stages are simple, but each one affects registration or examination access.
- 50% payment after admission gives access to first semester course registration, lectures and academic activities.
- At least 80% payment must come before second semester course registration.
- Full 100% payment must come before exam card printing and second semester examinations.
Students who miss any required stage may face a block at the next point of academic activity.
Students Can Still Pay Full Fees
Participation in the flexible tuition payment plan remains voluntary.
Students who prefer the usual payment system can still pay their full tuition fee at the beginning of the academic session. ABU has only added the flexible route for students who wish to spread payment across the session.
The choice rests with the student.
Agreement Through the ABU Portal
Students who want to use the flexible payment plan must accept a Flexible Tuition Fee Payment Agreement through the university portal.
The agreement states the conditions, timelines and obligations attached to the plan. A student who chooses the option should read the agreement with care before accepting it, since the payment stages link directly to registration and examination access.
