Elizade University, Ilara-Mokin, Ondo State, has moved further with plans to establish a Medical School.
The school gave fresh updates during the third edition of its Global Town Hall Meeting on the proposed project, where medical professionals, partners and other stakeholders discussed support for the plan. The meeting drew attention to volunteer expertise, donor interest, curriculum work and the readiness of the university’s medical facilities.
Diaspora Medical Experts Pledge Support
Dr Oluropo Ojo, convener of the Town Hall initiative, said the university has attracted a growing network of volunteer medical experts from the diaspora.
Dr Ojo, who works with Lincoln Medical School, United Kingdom, said many of the experts have promised to offer specialist training and services at no cost. He also said prospective donors have shown readiness to supply critical medical equipment once the programme starts.
That kind of support could matter from day one.
Vice-Chancellor Praises Founder’s Role
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Philip Oguntunde, praised the Founder, Chief Michael Ade. Ojo, for his long-running personal investment in the growth of the university.
He said the proposed Medical School would benefit both the school and Nigeria. Professor Oguntunde also said the university community looks forward to the start of the programme.
Curriculum and NUC Verification Plans
The Registrar, Mr Omololu Adegbenro, gave an update on the school’s regulatory plans.
He confirmed that the Medical School curriculum has been fully developed and now sits at the review stage. He also said preparations have reached an advanced stage for the National Universities Commission resource verification visit.
Medical Centre Preparedness
Dr Lanre Olatunde, Chief Medical Director of the University Medical Centre, spoke on facilities and clinical readiness.
He expressed strong confidence in the school’s level of preparation, noting that the medical centre already has high-grade medical equipment. Some of the equipment, he said, remains scarce in Nigeria.
Allied Health Sciences and Training Plans
Dr Alice Ogundele, Acting Dean of the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences, said the proposed Medical School would support the university’s health science programmes.
She said the plan would strengthen current programmes such as Nursing and widen training options across key healthcare fields. Her remarks placed the Medical School within the wider health training structure at Elizade University.
What Comes Next
Elizade University has set several parts of the plan in motion.
The Global Town Hall Meeting showed donor interest, diaspora medical support, curriculum progress, and preparation for the NUC resource verification visit. For now, stakeholders say the proposed Medical School stands as a planned addition to medical education and healthcare workforce training in Nigeria.
