The Jemila Abubakar Memorial Essay Competition invites undergraduates across Nigeria to participate in the 2025 edition, offering an opportunity to address critical mental health issues.
This annual event honours the memory of Miss Jemila Abubakar, the pioneer programme manager of the Asido Foundation, who dedicated her efforts to mental health advocacy before passing in July 2020.
Theme for the Competition
The theme for this year’s competition is “Bridging the Gap: Innovative Solutions for Mental Health Support in African Tertiary Institutions”.
Prizes for Winners
Participants have the chance to win cash prizes, which include:
- First Prize: N200,000.
- Second Prize: N150,000.
- Third Prize: N100,000.
Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for the competition, you must meet the following conditions:
- You must be an undergraduate enrolled in any Nigerian tertiary institution.
- Proof of studentship must be provided.
- You must sign the Asido Foundation’s Unashamed pledge, which is available at Asido Foundation’s Unashamed Pledge (https://asidofoundation.com/unashamed).
Essay Requirements
Participants should prepare an essay with:
- A word count of 750 to 1,000 words.
- Submission in Microsoft Word document format.
- A scanned copy of a recent photograph, proof of studentship, and the Unashamed pledge certificate uploaded along with the essay.
Essays that are AI-generated or contain plagiarism will result in automatic disqualification.

The deadline for submissions is 6 December 2024, at 11:59 PM.
