Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) Suspends Foreign Scholarships
Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) suspends foreign scholarships from January 2025. Learn why and what it means for academic staff.
The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) has announced the suspension of its foreign scholarship programme for academic staff.
This change will take effect from 1 January 2025.
The Board of Trustees approved the decision after considering rising costs of foreign training and increased cases of scholars failing to return.
A circular signed by the Executive Secretary, Arch. Sonny S. T. Echono, stated that the move aims to strengthen local capacity building.
The policy seeks to reduce dependence on foreign exchange and direct more resources into Nigerian tertiary institutions.
Beneficiary institutions have been advised to focus on implementing local training programmes.
This approach ensures academic staff continue to develop professionally while keeping investments within the country.
Scholars currently studying abroad under the programme will remain funded until their intervention period ends.
This provision ensures commitments to ongoing programmes are fully honoured.
The adjustment reflects a strategic shift to prioritise Nigeria’s tertiary education development.
