ABU 44th Convocation Honorary Degrees Recipients

Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, will honour Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and Sheikh Sharif Ibrahim Sale Al-Hussain during its 44th Convocation Ceremony.

The event will take place on Saturday, 25 January 2025.

University Senate and Governing Council Approval

The decision to confer the honorary degrees was made at the 544th Senate meeting on 7 January 2025.

The Governing Council approved the recommendation at its 207th meeting on 8 January 2025.

Both recipients have accepted the honour.

Degrees to Be Conferred

• Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala will receive a Doctor of Science (D.Sc.) Honoris Causa.
• Sheikh Sharif Ibrahim Sale will receive a Doctor of Laws (LL.D) Honoris Causa.

About Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala

Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala is a global finance expert and the Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO).

She has over 40 years of experience in international development, including a 25-year career at the World Bank, where she served as Managing Director (Operations).

She has held key roles in Nigeria, including two terms as Minister of Finance and briefly as Minister of Foreign Affairs.

Her achievements include negotiating Nigeria’s debt relief with the Paris Club, spearheading reforms in public financial management, and implementing transparency initiatives in revenue sharing.

About Sheikh Sharif Ibrahim Sale Al-Hussain

Sheikh Sharif Ibrahim Sale is a renowned Islamic scholar from Borno State.

He has authored over 500 books and contributed to Islamic studies, including philosophy, jurisprudence, and Qur’anic sciences.

He has served on committees advising governments on religious matters and represented Nigeria in international delegations to several countries.

His scholarship and dedication to Islamic studies have earned him global recognition.
