FUTA MBChB gets MDCN approval

Federal University of Technology, Akure, FUTA, has received accreditation from the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, MDCN, for its College of Health Sciences.
The approval authorises FUTA to continue with the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery, MBChB, programme. MDCN also approved an admission quota of 100 medical students for the university.
MDCN Accreditation Visit To FUTA
The MDCN team visited FUTA on Wednesday, 22 April 2026.
The team was led by the Deputy Registrar, Dr Nnameka Nwakanma. During the visit, the delegation met the university management led by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Adenike Oladiji.
Dr Nwakanma expressed satisfaction with the level of preparedness shown by FUTA. He also spoke on the need for the College of Health Sciences to keep its operations within the standards set by the Council.
FUTA MBChB Admission Quota
MDCN approved an admission quota of 100 medical students for FUTA.
This quota applies to the MBChB programme under the College of Health Sciences.
Facilities Inspected During The MDCN Visit
As part of the accreditation exercise, the MDCN delegation inspected facilities under Basic Medical Sciences, Basic Clinical Sciences and Clinical Sciences.
The team visited departments linked to medical training and patient care.
Departments Assessed
The inspected departments include:
- Human Anatomy
- Medical Microbiology
- Physiology
- Community Medicine
- Anatomic Pathology
- Chemical Pathology
- Haematology and Blood Transfusion
- Microbial Pathology
- Pharmacology and Therapeutics
Laboratories And Support Units Checked
The delegation also assessed selected training spaces and support facilities.
These include:
- Physiology Laboratory
- Animal House
- Histology and Histopathology Laboratory
- Medical Museum
The team checked equipment, space and instructional materials to confirm compliance with MDCN medical training standards.
Visit To Ijare And FUTA Teaching Hospital
The MDCN delegation visited the Comprehensive Health Centre, Ijare.
The visit covered the Rural Community Health Practice Centre and other support facilities located there.
The team also visited FUTA Teaching Hospital, where the Chief Medical Director, Professor Olusegun Ojo, received the delegation.
Acting Provost Presents College Overview
The Acting Provost of FUTA College of Health Sciences, Professor Victor Ukwenya, presented an overview of the College to the MDCN team.
Professor Ukwenya, who is also a Professor of Human Anatomy, spoke on the enabling statute, organogram and operating guidelines of the College.
He said the College structure was designed to support the link between preclinical and clinical training, while also helping its administration work properly.
FUTA Teaching Hospital CMD Reacts
Professor Olusegun Ojo described the MDCN approval as a major step for the university and its medical students.
He said the accreditation gives the school permission to prepare for the first professional examination.
According to him, “We are now going to prepare for our first Professional Examination which this accreditation has given us the permission to do.”
He added that preparation would start immediately.
Vice Chancellor Appreciates MDCN Team
The Vice Chancellor, Professor Adenike Oladiji, thanked Dr Nwakanma and his team for visiting FUTA.
She said the university management, the Provost and Heads of Units in the College of Health Sciences had worked to provide the required structures and facilities for the accreditation exercise.
Professor Oladiji also assured the MDCN team that FUTA would accept useful observations and act on recommendations that would strengthen the College of Health Sciences.
Akure Kingdom Support For FUTA MBChB Programme
Professor Oladiji also thanked the Deji of Akure Kingdom, Oba Aladetoyinbo Ogunlade Aladelusi.
She said the monarch mobilised key leaders of the Kingdom to support FUTA and the medical programme through the donation of multi-million-naira teaching laboratories and accommodation facility for medical students.
The Vice Chancellor said the support would benefit future generations.
