COREN, NSE induct 885 ABU Engineering Graduands

The Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria has inducted 885 graduates from its Faculty of Engineering into the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) and the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE).

The ceremony was held on Saturday, 5th October 2024 at Maman Kontagora Square, on the main campus at Samaru, Zaria.

Graduates participated in an oath-taking session administered by representatives from COREN and NSE.

Vice-Chancellor’s Advice for New Engineers

The Vice-Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University, Prof. Kabiru Bala, addressed the graduates, extending best wishes for their future careers in engineering.

His message, delivered by Prof. M.S. Shehu, Provost of the College of Medical Sciences, emphasised the importance of resilience and integrity in the practice of engineering.

COREN’s Plans to Improve Engineering Education

Prof. Sadiq Zubair Abubakar, President of COREN, shared initiatives aimed at improving engineering education in Nigerian universities.

One of the measures discussed was the introduction of a mandatory internship before the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), designed to prepare graduates for the demands of their profession.

The COREN President also mentioned that practising engineers would need to renew their licences each year, a step towards aligning with international standards.

He noted that these measures would allow engineers to practise globally and access better career opportunities in both public and private sectors.

Encouragement from NSE

Margaret Aina Oguntala, President of NSE, represented by Engr. Agee A. Agba, Chairman of NSE Zaria branch, addressed the new graduates, encouraging dedication and integrity in their work.

She urged them to be actively involved in their profession, highlighting the opportunities to contribute to society through engineering.

Lecture on Professional Licencing

A guest lecture was delivered by Engr. Ibrahim Abdullahi Maimaje, an alumnus of Ahmadu Bello University.

He spoke about the value of professional licencing for career growth, explaining how maintaining a licence can significantly benefit career advancement in engineering.

Awards for Excellence

The ceremony concluded with the presentation of awards and cash prizes to the top graduating students for their outstanding achievements.

Several individuals were also recognised for their support towards engineering education, including the Vice-Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University, the COREN President, the NSE President, the Guest Lecturer, and the Managing Director of Kaduna Refinery.
