Sa’adu Zungur University, SAZU, Yuli Campus, has released a dress code policy for all students. The move follows federal directives aimed at curbing indecent dressing in tertiary institutions.
The university authority, through a notice signed by the Deputy Dean of Students Affairs, Mohammed Waziri, said decent dressing is now a key concern alongside the fight against cultism. The message is plain; students are expected to comply to protect their academic standing.
Why SAZU released the dress code
The notice links the dress code to federal directives on indecent dressing in tertiary schools. It also places the policy beside the university’s stand against cultism.
For the school, dress on campus is no small matter. The rule now applies to all students, no matter the course of study.
Clothes and styles banned by SAZU
The university listed several items and dressing styles that students must avoid.
Short, tight and revealing outfits
The ban covers:
- Short or skimpy outfits
- “Body hugs”
- Spaghetti straps
- Dresses that expose sensitive parts
- Tight shorts
- Skirts above the knees
- Tight-fitting jeans, including Hip star, Patra, and Lactase, that reveal body contours
Torn, transparent and open clothing
Students are also barred from wearing:
- Tattered jeans
- Jeans with holes
- See-through dresses
- Shirts without buttons
- Shirts left unbuttoned to reveal the chest
- Singlets worn in public as outer clothing
Other banned dressing styles
The policy also bans:
- Long skirts with high front or side slits
- Trousers that stop between the knee and ankle, described as three-quarter wear
- T-shirts with offensive or obscene captions
Grooming and appearance rules
The dress code goes beyond clothing. It also covers grooming, jewellery, and eyewear.
Rules for male students
Male students are not allowed to:
- Plait or weave their hair
- Wear earrings
The notice also discourages unkempt appearance, including excessive body hair and untidy beards.
Eyewear restriction
Coloured eyeglasses are banned in lecture theatres, except where a student has a documented medical reason.
SAZU penalties for dress code violations
The university has set out a three-step penalty system for students who break the dress code.
First offence
The student must appear before the Unit Dress Code Implementation Committee for formal counselling.
Second offence
The student will be barred from academic facilities. These include:
- Lecture theatres
- Libraries
- Laboratories
- Studios
- Workshops
- Clinics
Third offence
The student will appear before the Advisory Committee on Student Discipline for further action.
Final note to students
The university said the rules apply to all students, regardless of course of study. Students are also expected to dress in a way that allows proper use of laboratory coats and active participation in practical sessions.
