NEMA National Essay Competition 2026 opens for entries

The National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, has opened entries for the National Essay Competition 2026.

The competition is set to build emergency preparedness, disaster awareness, and resilience among Nigeria’s youth. For many applicants, the first question is simple; who can enter, and what topic fits each group?

NEMA essay competition categories and topics

The competition has three categories, and each one comes with its own theme.

Senior Secondary School

Topic: “My Role in Disaster Risk Reduction”

Students in tertiary institutions

Topic: “Climate Change and Disaster Management in Nigeria”

NYSC “Emergency Management Vanguards” corps members

Topic: “Technology for Disaster Response: Opportunities and Challenges”

Cash prizes for winners

Winners will receive cash prizes in three places:

Submission rules and eligibility

Interested participants must follow the stated rules for their entries to count.

Format for essays

Entries must be submitted as a Word document in Times New Roman, size 12 font.

Entry limit

Only one entry is allowed per individual.

Details to include

Each entry must carry the participant’s full name, category, and details of school or NYSC deployment.

The judging criteria follow a weighted scale:

NEMA essay competition deadline

The deadline for submission is 15 April 2026.

Entries sent after that date, or entries that do not meet the stated conditions, will not be considered. That Date sits at the heart of the notice.
