What began as a children’s inter-house sports event at Sunshine Schools, Ibadan, took a different shape on Thursday as parents arrived in coordinated aso ebi and turned the venue into a bright, crowd-pulling scene.
The event, tagged “Sunshine Schools Olympics 2026”, featured the usual track and field activities for pupils. Yet videos seen online showed something else too; parents in matching outfits, moving in groups, dancing, and parading in colours such as yellow, blue and white.
Parents turn up in matching outfits
At the centre of the attention were parents of Sunshine Schools pupils, dressed in coordinated aso ebi linked to their children’s houses.
Some appeared in yellow. Others wore blue, white, and other traditional styles. They marched in support of their children; they danced in organised groups, and the event took on the feel of a cultural display.
One photo showed parents in yellow aso ebi marching and dancing during the school’s inter-house sports event in Ibadan on Thursday.
Another image showed some parents in white and other traditional aso ebi styles celebrating their children’s performance.
Students still took part in sports
The event still included the usual school sports contests for pupils.
Pupils appeared in coordinated house colours at the Sunshine Schools inter-house sports event in Ibadan, while the track and field programme went on as expected.

Online reactions follow the display
The parents’ appearance stirred plenty of comments online.
One Instagram user wrote, “Na Ojude Oba be this o”, pointing to the well-known festival noted for colourful dressing and grand parades.
Another user, @queenkhalisha2, wrote, “Me I don’t even understand again if the activity is for the kids or parents.”
A third user, @tomiluxuryfabrics, added, “Abeg nah parent dey do inter-house sport abi nah children. Koyemi oooo.”
Those comments reflected the question many people asked after seeing the clips: was the main attraction the pupils or the parents?
A shift in the look of inter-house sports
Inter-house sports events in Nigerian schools usually centre on pupils competing in races and field contests while parents watch from the side in casual wear.
At Sunshine Schools, Ibadan, the presence of coordinated aso ebi among parents pointed to a wider social side of the event. That change has already sparked discussion about how school social activities in Nigeria may be taking a new shape.
For now, it remains unclear whether other schools will follow the same path. Still, the Ibadan event has clearly set people talking.
