House of Representatives Approves Four New Universities

The House of Representatives has approved the establishment of four new Federal Universities across Nigeria. The decision was taken during plenary on Tuesday, with the goal of expanding access to higher education and strengthening academic development in key regions.

The newly approved universities will be located in Borno, Imo, Kaduna, and Kano States. Lawmakers adopted the report presented by Rep. Abubakar Fulata (APC–Jigawa), Chairman of the House Committee on University Education, after considering four education-related bills.

Details of the New Universities Approved by the House of Representatives

The approved bills include:

1. A bill to repeal the Federal Polytechnic, Kaduna Act and establish the Federal University of Technology, Kaduna.
2. A bill to repeal the Nigerian Army University, Biu (Act 2020) and enact the Federal University, Biu, Borno State.
3. A bill to establish Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education, Owerri, Imo State.
4. A bill to establish Maitama Sule Federal University of Education, Kano State.

According to Rep. Fulata, the Federal University of Technology, Kaduna will offer training and teaching across various fields, focusing on the practical application of science and technology. He added that the Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education, Owerri will promote and develop teacher education through specialised programmes designed to improve classroom delivery.

Next Steps After Approval by the House of Representatives

After the adoption of the committee’s report, the House of Representatives directed that the bills be transmitted to the Senate for concurrence. Once approved, they will proceed to the President for assent before becoming law.

Rep. Fulata explained that each new university would also provide opportunities for academic research, administration, and professional development to support Nigeria’s education sector.
